Sometimes a yard just isn't working - and it's not always obvious why. Here, the old retaining wall had run its course. It wasn't holding grade properly, the space around the front of the house felt unfinished, and the lawn wasn't draining or sitting the way it should. That kind of problem doesn't fix itself with a patch job. It needed a full tear-out and a fresh start.
We pulled the old wall completely, brought in our Kubota mini excavator and tractor to get the ground shaped the way we needed it, then rebuilt the retaining wall from scratch. Getting the block set right - level, properly stepped, and following the natural curve of the house - is what makes a wall last. We use a level constantly during this phase. It's not glamorous work, but it's what separates a wall that holds for years from one that shifts after the first heavy rain.
Once the wall was in and the grading was dialed in, we brought in fresh fill dirt to build up the bed area between the wall and the house. That fill is what gives the planting area its form and keeps water moving away from the foundation the way it should. No cutting corners on the base - that's what the whole finished product sits on.
With the hardscaping done and the dirt graded smooth, we laid new Bermuda sod across the front yard. Bermuda is a great fit for yards like this - it establishes well, handles foot traffic, and fills in thick over time. What you end up with isn't just a yard that looks better. It's one that actually functions better. Proper grade, a solid wall, and healthy turf all working together.
This is the kind of job we genuinely enjoy doing. It's not a small undertaking, but the end result speaks for itself. A clean wall, fresh sod going in tight, and a front yard that finally makes sense - that's what good landscape design and hardscaping work looks like when it's done right.
